In 1909 entrepreneur Sir Thomas Lipton organized an international football tournament in Turin.The English FA refused to send a team, so the amateurs of West Auckland F.C. were invited. On April 12th, 1909 they beat Swiss side FC Winterthur 2-0 in the final to win The Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, also known as the first World Cup. In 1911 They returned to Italy, retaining the trophy by thrashing Juventus 6-1 in the final.
