Sultan S??leyman and the S??leymaniye Mosque, Constantinople, 1574. Suleiman I (November 6, 1494 - September 6, 1566) was a Sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1520-66). He led Ottoman armies in conquering the Christian strongholds of Belgrade and Rhodes as well as most of Hungary. He annexed much of the Middle East and large areas of North Africa. Under his rule, the Ottoman fleet dominated the seas from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and through the Persian Gulf. Suleiman instituted major legislative changes relating to society, education, taxation and criminal law. His reforms harmonized the relationship between the two forms of Ottoman law; sultanic and religious. He was a poet, goldsmith, and a great patron of culture, overseeing the Golden Age of the Ottoman Empire. Engraving by Melchior Lorck, 16th century (cropped and cleaned).
