The Freedom Monument in the centre of Riga, Latvia, was initially built to honour the soldiers who died in the Latvian War of Independence (1918-1920). It has, however, become to be seen as a symbol of the continued independence of Latvia. Here, the dark storm clouds symbolise the current threats to this independence, while the sunlight shining on the monument creates the impression of hope shining through.
