Venice is the only city in the world-famous for its Venetian theatrical face masks and masquerade masks and has been for centuries. There were many faces masking shops in and around its narrow streets, handcrafting masks to suit individual taste. Ca Macana mask-making workshop is the oldest in Venice and one of the very few to survive against the mass import of masks from China and sold in tourist souvenir shops. The small premises is tucked away in a narrow passage where passing visitors can stop and admire the full window display of a variety of masks in an assortment of vivid colours and unique designs. More so, watching how a mask is made when entering the small shop. Founder and owner, Mario Bellon Mario has a studio at the back of the shop where both visitor and student learn how to make and paint masks. Mario Bellon, says, “ His business started in 1984 when the Venice carnival was being revived after two centuries of decline”.
