A vigil was held by several hundred Tibetans and supporters opposite the Chinese Embassy in Portland Place, London in protest against the brutal repression of protests in Lhasa in which 13 people were killed. After an hour of chanting slogans, a young man carrying a Tibetan flag jumped over the barriers and rushed towards the doorway of the Chinese Embassy. Police held him as about half of those present rushed to follow his example, and there were a short series of scuffles between the protesters and police, aided by the event stewards. They first stopped the protesters, then puhsed them back to the centre island of the road where they (and I) were surrounded by a line of police. Some minutes later, the officer in charge read out a message to the demonstrators from a police van, although it was largely inaudible. I think they were warned they would be liable to arrest if they failed to follow police orders to return behind the barriers on the far side of the road. Police and stewards then escorted them there in small groups to join those who had not rushed across the road.
