STS-2, the second NASA Space Shuttle Mission, and the second flight of the Orbiter Columbia, was originally set for launch on October 9, 1981, but leakage of nitrogen tetroxide oxidizer required removal, decontamination, and reapplication of more than 300 of Columbia's thermal protection system tiles. The Orbiter's exposed skin is clearly visible adjacent to an access panel of the Forward Reaction Control System. The missing thermal protective system tiles were removed from the area immediately below the forward oxidizer panel where the leakage occurred. Extending from the Orbiter, at center, are supply lines for helium and nitrogen tetroxide, and vent lines. The scaffolding and work platforms surrounding the spacecraft at Launch Pad 39A have been erected to allow for repairs at the site. Kennedy Space Center, Florida, September, 1981.
