Abandoned ruins of a residential building in Guerrero Viejo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. In its heyday the city was a popular destination for European, and American tourists as well as wealthy Mexicans. The town was abandoned in 1953 when construction of the Falcon dam was completed. The resulting lake inundated several towns and villages upriver from the dam including Guerrero Viejo. The original town was settled in the eighteenth century. Most of the city was built of sandstone quarried at a site north of town. Since its demise the city had become a popular tourist destination for people who are interested in the history and architecture of the place. Today (2011) the ruins are occupied by the Zetas drug cartel and tourism to the area has ceased. Historically and architecturally, this is a significant site. It would be heartbreaking to see it destroyed by missiles, rocket propelled grenades and other heavy armaments fired by the Mexican Navy and the cartel.
