August 23rd commemorates the day in 1958 that China began a 44 day artillery bombardment of 474, 901 artillery shells on Kinmen Island, Taiwan. 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the Republic of China (Taiwan). The first ringing of the “Bell of Peace” occurred at 11:00 AM, today, in Kinmen’s Peace Square. Guests from over 100 countries attended the Peace ceremony in Kinmen, Taiwan; thirteen countries and 19 locations around the world joined with Taiwan by ringing peace bells in unison at the same precise time. In attendance and ringing the “Bell of Peace” for the first time with Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou were Nobel Peace Prize Laureates F.W. DeKlerk, former South African President and Song Kosal, representative of International Campaign To Ban Landmines. The “Bell of Peace” was made of bronze, iron, steel and melted down artillery shells which bombarded Kinmen, Taiwan during a historical Chinese artillery bombardment which began on August 23, 1958. During 44 days of bombardment, China fired 474, 901 artillery shells at Kinmen, Taiwan (ROC).
