Lobos Island was formed by volcanic eruptions about 50, 000 years ago and is only a few miles across making it easy to explore within a day. Although the Monk seals, after which the island was named (Lobos means seal in Spanish) have moved elsewhere, there is a wide variety of wildlife to include salt resistant plants and seabirds. The main crater is visible on the far right of the photo. The smaller craters are called Hornitos.
