‘Hippies’ attending the Easter ‘Be in’, Central Park, New York City, 26 March 1967. Between 1967 and 1968 several ‘Be-ins’ were held in Central Park to protest against issues such as USA’s involvement in the Vietnam War and racism. About 10, 000 people gathered at the Sheep Meadow in Central Park. The majority of participants were considered to be ‘hippies’. Many wore flowers, petals and garlands. Some had their faces painted. The event’s unofficial password was ‘love’ - a vintage nineteen sixties photograph. This archive image is slightly soft and will not be suitable to be used at large sizes.
