Garron Tower was built in the mid nineteenth century by the Marchioness of Londonderry Frances Anne Vane as a summer retreat from the bustle of high society She was one of the leading aristocrats of Victorian England who in 1834 inherited part of her mother s estate in Carnlough Co Antrim The castle was designed by the architect Lewis Vulliamy in the form of a gothic pseudo castle based upon the design of Burg Rheinstein 13th century castle on the Rhine Garron Tower had all the paraphernalia of a mighty fortress equipped with battlements portcullis magazine and cannons Like many stately homes of the 19th century Garron Tower has had a chequered past After her death in 1865 her grandson Lord Herbert Vane Tempest inherited Lady Frances Anne s estate around Garron Tower When Herbert died in 1911 Garron Tower was auctioned off and duly purchased by Henry McNeill of Larne in 1915 who converted it into an hotel He had rented and been using the property since 1899 The remaining part of the estate passed onto Herbert s cousin one Sir Winston Churchill The main building at Garron Tower was damaged by fire in 1914 and then again in 1922 It remained a desolate ruin until bought by the Diocese of Down and Connor in 1950 who then converted it into a Catholic boys boarding school named St MacNissi s College Digitally restored Art 1890 1900 Photochrom or Photochrome is used to create a color print from a black and white photo negative using between four and fourteen lithograph stones made from rocklike substances to colorize the print with several different inks
