"Ikat" weaving technique: a kingdom of expression for Sumbanese women In East Sumba, women use textile creation to represent their ability and responsibility. They use ikat weaving technique to develop idea and social ordinance. "Woven cloths symbolize the dignity and wealth of women, both morally and materially, " wrote Biranul Anas from Faculty of Art & Design Department at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in a paper published by ASEAN Journal on Hospitality and Tourism (2007). The "ikat" weaving technique is used for making various kinds of traditional textiles; the Sumbanese woven cloths. However, it is dominantly used in the production of "hinggi"—the main component in Sumbanese men's traditional suits. As a communication media for conveying messages, wrote Anas, "hinggi plays the role of message carrier." According to Anas, hinggi is a symbol of prestige in the contexts of gender and social hierarchy, the socio-economical ordinance within the communities. In religious context, hinggi symbolizes supernatural powers (marapu) and the descendants of the aristocrats (maramba). "There are strict traditional requirements in the weaving process, " wrote Anas. "In (all of) this context, the high status given to hinggi departed from the customs and traditions in East Sumba, placing cloths in the realm of women, " he wrote. Production time of Sumbanese textiles vary from several weeks to one year. In tourism context, Sumba textile is also an alternative source of income for the rural communities living on an island regularly hit by drought.
