Yasnaya Polyana (literally : "Clear Glade") was the home of the writer Leo Tolstoy, where he was born, wrote War and Peace and Anna Karenina, and is buried. Tolstoy called Yasnaya Polyana his "inaccessible literary stronghold". It is located 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) southwest of Tula, Russia and 200 kilometers (120 mi) from Moscow. The Kuzminsky House was built in the early 19th century, in Prince Volkonsky's time. Originally it was (as well as the Tolstoy House) a part of the architectural ensemble that consisted of three parts: a large manor house, in which Leo Tolstoy was born (it was later sold by Tolstoy) and two identical wings. In 1859-1862 the house was used as a school, founded by Tolstoy for peasant children. Later it was named the Kuzminsky House in honor of Tolstoy's sister-in-law Tatyana Kuzminsky, who often stayed here when she came to Yasnaya Polyana. Today the building is used for various exhibitions revealing different aspects of Tolstoy's life and work and the history of the museum.
