Black Swan ( Cygnus atratus) preening on the East Pond of New York's Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. Black Swans are native to Australia. This swan is obviously an escapee. Gateway National Recreation Area was established in 1972 and is a five-district park with sections in New Jersey, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Queens.
