The Maui County Fair is a traditional part of Maui life which has been repeated annually for nearly 100 years (in 2020, it was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic). The traditional time is the first full weekend in October and starts off with a parade. It features rides, games, and fair food provided by E. K. Fernandez. Maui's agricultural history is reborn with the Livestock and Poultry Exhibit as well as the Horticulture Show. Talented kids and adults compete for ribbons in the Photo and Poster Contest as well as in the Hobbies & Craft Exhibit. A wonderful taste attraction is the Food Court with lots of traditional Hawaiian food such as Kalua Pig, Chicken Long Rice, Haupia, Teriyaki Pork and Malasadas — plus many mainland fair favorites. Prior to our visit to the Fair, my little buddy, Johnny, made friends with a couple of local kids at Napili Beach. The next day, he ran into them again at the beach and invited them to our condo to see the giant gecko that he had won at the Fair. They were impressed.
