Anta Diallo (46) and her extended family of children, daughters-in-law and grandchildren fled their home near the northern town of Djené in late 2021. With a large farm, plentiful livestock and a profitable business selling milk, they were relatively prosperous. But an armed insurgency swept through their area and they were forced to abandon their home. “One day we were scared because in Djéné people were being killed. So we fled with our children, ” says Anta. After a long journey up the river Niger, Anta and her extended family settled near the town of Tamani, in Ségou Region. Farming on just a small plot of land and faced with exorbitant food prices, the family could not get enough food to feed themselves. Today the youth in the family are forced to work odd jobs in town or take on work as itinerant shepherds to ensure the family can get the food they need. “There, we knew no hunger, ” Anta remembers. “But here we’re short on food. So, these hard times cannot be compared to the time of abundance. If I had known, we would have stayed there.”
