The Passaic River is a tributary of Newark Bay, approximately 80 mi (129 km long), in northern New Jersey in the United States. The river in it upper course flows in a highly circuitous route, meandering through the swamp lowlands between the ridge hills of rural and suburban northern New Jersey, draining much of the northern portion of the state through its tributaries. In its lower portion, it flows through the most urbanized and industrialized areas of the state, including along downtown Newark. The lower river suffered from severe pollution and industrial abandonment in the 20th century, but has begun to recover in recent decades. The Bridge Street Bridge spans the Passaic River between Newark and Harrison. In its lowest reaches, it flows along the northeast side of the city of Newark, passing Kearny and Harrison, New Jersey on the opposite bank. Near downtown Newark it makes an abrupt northwest bend, then south, joining the Hackensack River at the north end of Newark Bay estuary, a back bay of New York Harbor. The EPA is investigating the Passaic River because pesticides, dioxin, PCBs, metals and other hazardous substances have been found in Passaic River sediments near the land-based part of the Diamond Alkali Superfund Site . River sediments are the small soil particles at the bottom and on the banks of the river. Evidence indicates that the ecology of the Passaic River has been adversely impacted by the presence of these hazardous substances. This impact is reflected in the State of New Jersey's prohibition of the sale and consumption of striped bass, blue crab and other seafood in the Passaic River. Some of these hazardous substances may also cause cancer in humans. The Passaic River Study Area is the lower six miles of the Passaic River. It is bordered on the eastern shore of the river by Harrison and Kearny, and on the western shore by Newark. It includes all parts of the Passaic River from one mile south of the Second River Tributary in northern Newark,
