An Ermine Street Guard Roman re-enactor eats a meal outside his goat-skin tent at Loggerheads Country Park, Denbighshire, Wales, UK. He wears an Imperial-Gallic helmet (galia), with hinged cheek pieces & a neck guard, & lorica hamata iron mail body armour. He has a dagger (pugio) on his waist belt (cingulum) & an apron of studded leather straps to protect his private parts. He sits on a wooden stool outside a hand-stitched waterproof tent known as a papilio or butterfly. The tent was shared by a unit of 8 legionaries called a contubernium. He wears caliga hobnailed leather sandals. His marching pack with straw hat is to the R. Beside him are two scutum shields & two javelins (pilum). He is eating a meal of wheat bread & meat stew cooked in a cauldron over a wood fire. This display took place outside the Loggerheads Countryside Centre on National Archaeology Day 19 July 2003.
