The Grote Kerk or St Bavo Kerk started its life as a Catholic church around 1400 and became a cathedral in 1559 when Haarlem became a diocese. This tower was completed only in 1520 after previous attempts to build a stone tower failed. This is a wooden construction clad in lead. The church and its interior was spared during The Beeldenstorm, the iconoclastic riots of 1566, but was confiscated in 1578 and converted to Protestantism. Mozart played the world famous church organ when he was 10 years old in 1766. The present roman catholic cathedral is again named after St Bavo. It is in a different place just outside the center of town and dates from the end of the nineteenth century.
