Ella Fitzgerald, The First Lady of Song was born in Newport Virginia on 25 April 1917. She made her debut when she was 17 at an amaeur night. She joined Chick Webb's band a year later for $12.50 a night. She made her first recording in 1936 with 'Love and Kisses', then she made 'A Tisket - A Tasket' which sold a million and was No1 for 17 weeks. The band became known as Ella Ftzgerald's following the death of Chick Webb. Ella was taken over by Norman Granz as her manager and played and sang with everyone Duke Ellington, Louis Armstong, Count Basie, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Cole Porter, & Irving Berlin. Ira Gershwin was once heard to remark "I never knew how good our songs were until I heard Ella Fitzgerald sing them". She made over 200 records in her lifetime which sold more than 40 million copies. She died on the 15th June 1996,
