The restored conch house is used by Pigeon Key Foundation and Marine Science Center. A conch house is a style of architecture that developed in Key West, Florida in the 19th century and used into the early 20th century. The conch house is built of wood, and set on posts or piers which allows air to circulate under the floor. The style was also used in the other keys and in the Miami area. The introduction of the conch house style is attributed to immigrants from the Bahamas. The Seven Mile Bridge is a bridge in the Florida Keys, in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It connects Knight's Key (part of the city of Marathon, Florida) in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. The old seven mile bridge stands right alongside the new seven mile bridge in the Florida Keys. The modern bridge is open to vehicular traffic; the older one only to pedestrians, anglers and cyclists. Pigeon Key is accessible by a segment of Old Seven Mile Bridge or by ferry. In the Florida Keys, there is no name better known than Henry Flagler who built the world-famous Oversea Railway in the early 1900s. Called the "8th Wonder of the World", this amazing ribbon of steel and concrete forever changed the history of the Florida Keys. Among the longest bridges in existence when it was built, it is part of the Overseas Highway in the Keys, which is part of the 2, 369-mile US Route 1.
