Producer Stephen Chow's hit comedy franchise drove up China's box-office sales 13 percent over the week-long New Year holiday and led the industry's first monthly gain since August. Ticket revenue for the six days ending February 2 rose to 3.34 billion yuan ($485 million), compared with 2.96 billion yuan over the February 8 - February 13 holiday period a year earlier, according to industry data provider EntGroup Inc. Chow's "Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back" set a single-day record for ticket revenue at about 354 million yuan on January 28, the first day of Chinese New Year, according to industry consultants Ent Group. A sequel to Chow's 2013 hit, "Journey to the West" is based on Buddhist monk Tang Sanzang's journey to India. The installment helped January box office revenue jump 25 percent to 4.8 billion yuan, the steepest gain since March 2016.
