This 'sad' building, in Arkengarthdale, is passed by walkers en-route from Castle Farm to Reeth. According to the 1891 census, the farmhouse would appear to have been occupied by William Hodgson a farmer / leadminer. Subsequently, in the early 20th century, it was occupied by Robert Johnson, formerly a road contractor from Grinton, who became a farmer. By the outbreak of the second world war, the building was occupied by Robert's son Thomas and his family. It would appear that Thomas was working as a road man for the North Riding County Council and his two older sons were working as a stone-mason and as an apprentice radio and electrical engineer. Thomas died, aged 62, in 1940. It is possible that the house was abandoned at about that time.
