There are two principal street railway systems in thecity, the Washington & Georgetown Railroad Company JNEW ORLEAN^ Few American cities havechanged so much in the last two orthree years as has New Orleans.The work of transformation to elec-tricity was commenced hardly twoyears ago; to-day the principal linesare in operation and the others arein the process of transformation.Able engineering talent has been at work in New Orleans, and although the difficulties en-countered are unusually serious, particularly in thematter of obtaining good foundations for the roadbedand buildings, the results will be equal, it is believed, tothose obtained in other cities. Pittsburgh Consolidation talk is in theair in Pittsburgh, the ex-ample of Philadelphiabeing apparently infec-tious. No definite results have yet been reached but it isbelieved that the four principal traction companies of thecity, the Pittsburgh, the Duquesne, the Central and theCitizens, will eventually be merged into one. The formerdecided, a year or two ago, to use the cable system andequipped all of its lines in that way. The latter at firstmade a fair and honest trial of the storage battery sys-tem, which was not successful under the conditions ofservice. In August, 1894, Congress passed a law specific-ally stating that the underground electric system was tobe adopted on the Metropolitan lines and placed a timelimit for the completion of the system. Mr. A. N. Con-nett was
