June 10, 2023, Philadelphia. No Arena in Chinatown protest march. Residents of Save the UC Townhomes, allies in solidarity. The UC Townhome residents live in Black Bottom, a neighborhood whose community had been displaced and gentrified into what is now University City. The proposed arena on Market St, opponents fear, will spur gentrification leading to the destruction and dispersal of the Chinatown community. Opponents point to the fate of Washington DC Chinatown as the most recent example of a destroyed Chinatown community. Organized by a coalition of several Asian American groups and allies, the diverse crowd of activists marched through Chinatown and rallied in front of City Hall.
