The largest steam locomotive ever built, the Union Pacific Railroad 'Big Boy' roaring along near Winfield, Illinois in the summer of 2019 as the cab crew waved to onlookers of the special excursion train. The locomotive was fully restored to its original condition in honor of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 that linked the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads. In all, a total of 25 'Big Boy' 4-8-8-4 Challenger Type locomotive were built between 1941 to 1944. They operated in Utah and Wyoming until 1959 and were officially retired from service in 1961-62. The units, with their tenders weighed 1, 250, 000 pounds. After its restoration, 'Big Boy' 4014 went on an extended commemorative run through numerous states from Wyoming to Illinois.
