The Trail is a partnership project between the towns of Alsager, Congleton, Holmes Chapel, Middlewich and Sandbach. The free leaflet describes the route starting from Astbury Mere Country Park, Congleton in a clockwise direction but it can easily be started from any of the towns. The Biddulph Valley Way, a former railway track, provides an easy start to reach Nick i' th' Hill although a more strenuous alternative can be taken along Congleton Edge and part of the Mow Cop Ridge. Farmland paths and canal towpaths take the route close to Alsager and onwards to Sandbach, with its Saxon stone crosses, and Middlewich noted for its salt production. From Middlewich the trail uses field paths and minor roads to Holmes Chapel then joins the Dane Valley Way, passing the impressive Twemlow viaduct, on its way back to Congleton.
