"Guide Me" FY 233: An engineless 40' Looe lugger based in Gweek in Cornwall and owned by Jono and Judy Brickhill and built in 1911 by Peter Ferris of Looe for Mr. W Pengelly. She has an overall length of 72' a beam of 12'10" and draft of 5'10". A pilchard driver and long liner, she fished out of various East Cornwall harbours until being sold on to the Solent in 1966 to a Ted Williams. Mr. Williams fitted an engine and worked her out of Fareham Creek. He renamed her “Guidez-Moi” and remodelled the stern. She was bought in 1977 and restored by the present owners, including removing the engine and restoring the original transom stern. In 1988 the Brickhills sailed via the Douarnenez Festival to Spain, Portugal, Tenerife, La Palma and on to Brazil. They returned via Cape Town in South Africa and then later back to America. “Guide Me” has two dipping lugsails and is worked by sail and oar only. For a traditional working boat, she is a very fast sailing vessel carrying ample sail. Here she is moored in her home port of Helford River.
