Photograph by David Coleman. The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, dedicated on May 2, 1997, is a sprawling 7.5-acre site along the western edge of the Tidal Basin in Washington DC. The memorial is unique in its design, featuring a series of outdoor rooms that represent each of FDR's four terms in office. The statue of Roosevelt in his wheelchair, captured in this image, was a later addition to the memorial, unveiled on January 10, 2001. The decision to depict FDR in a wheelchair was the result of a long debate. Roosevelt, who contracted polio in 1921, went to great lengths to conceal his disability from the public during his presidency. However, disability rights advocates argued that showing Roosevelt in his wheelchair would be a powerful symbol of his strength and perseverance. The bronze statue, created by sculptor Robert Graham, shows Roosevelt seated in a wheelchair modeled after the one he designed himself. The sculpture is life-sized, with Roosevelt's figure measuring about 4 feet high. The inclusion of the scale model in the foreground of this image provides insight into the sculptural process and allows visitors to examine the details up close. This memorial is part of the larger National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington DC. Its location on the Tidal Basin places it near other significant monuments, including those dedicated to Thomas Jefferson and Martin Luther King Jr. The FDR Memorial is particularly stunning during Washington's famous cherry blossom season when the Tidal Basin is ringed with blooming trees.
