Photograph by David Coleman. The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, opened in 1910, is an architectural jewel on Washington DC's National Mall. The building's imposing exterior showcases the Beaux-Arts style, characterized by its symmetrical design, elaborate details, and grand scale. The facade is constructed primarily of granite and features a central portico with eight Corinthian columns supporting a classical pediment. Above this rises the building's most distinctive feature: a green-patinated copper dome, which has become an iconic part of the DC skyline. The museum spans 1.5 million square feet and houses over 146 million scientific specimens and cultural artifacts. As part of the Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest museum and research complex, it's one of the most visited natural history museums globally. The building's design, by architects Hornblower and Marshall, was intended to convey the importance and permanence of the scientific research conducted within. Its location on the National Mall places it at the heart of America's cultural and political center, alongside other national landmarks and Smithsonian museums. This free museum attracts millions of visitors annually, offering exhibits on subjects ranging from dinosaurs and ocean life to human origins and precious gems, including the famous Hope Diamond.
