The Lincoln Memorial is an iconic American monument located in Washington, D.C., dedicated to the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Designed by architect Henry Bacon, the memorial was completed in 1922 and stands as a symbol of unity, freedom, and equality. Situated on the western end of the National Mall, the Lincoln Memorial is an imposing structure inspired by ancient Greek architecture. Constructed from marble and limestone, it features 36 Doric columns, each representing one of the states in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death in 1865. The monument is 190 feet long, 119 feet wide, and 99 feet tall. At the heart of the memorial, a larger-than-life marble statue of a seated Abraham Lincoln, sculpted by Daniel Chester French, captures the essence of the leader who fought to preserve the nation during the Civil War and championed the abolition of slavery. The statue is 19 feet tall and weighs approximately 175 tons. Engraved on the walls of the memorial are two of Lincoln's most famous speeches: the Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address. These speeches underscore the timeless values that Lincoln embodied and his enduring impact on the United States. Today, the Lincoln Memorial remains a popular site for visitors and a backdrop for various historic events, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech delivered in 1963 during the March on Washington.
