Staufen im Breisgau, Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg, Germany: crests on the Town Hall. Wettelbrunn (crest on right) and Grunern (on left) are villages near Staufen im Breisgau, to the south and west. Staufen is a medieval town located at the foot of the Black Forest, near the border of France and Switzerland. Vineyards on the surrounding hills and later silver mines brought prosperity and the town crest is a shield with three wine glasses. The town’s most famous inhabitant was Dr Johan Georg Faust whose life was portrayed in popular folktales and who earned worldwide renown through a play by German poet and playwright Johann Wolfgang Goethe, published in two parts in 1808 and 1832. Faust’s life was also the basis for many other works of literature. Dr Faust was a scholar with supposedly magic powers who was brought to the city by the Lords of Staufen to turn silver into gold. According to legend, Faust made a pact with Mephistopheles (a demon in German folklore) or the Devil, who eventually killed him. The truth was that Dr Faust died horribly in 1539 in Staufen because of his unfulfilled promise to provide the impoverished Lord of Staufen with gold through alchemy. D1252.B4942
