Venice, Italy - 5 September 2017. No people in view. Venice is one of the great cities of the world, famed for its canals, sublime architecture, beauty and exotic history. It is also inundated by tourists for much of the year, stupidly expensive, often smelly and slowly sinking into the Adriatic. Oh dear - you pick. At the very heart of historic Venice is St Marks Square, graced by three iconic buildings - St Marks Basilica, the Ducal Palace and Bell Tower. The DogeÕs Palace - Palazzo Ducale - is a lavish example of Venetian Gothic style. Constructed in 1340, it housed the Doge - the leader of the Venetian Republic over several centuries when the city - state was a world power. After centuries of conquest and decline, it became a state museum in 1923.
