This inn was a stopping place for stage coaches and mail coaches, Jane Austen lived within easy walking distance of the inn and would often have walked here several times a week to post and receive letters (the recipient had to pay in those days and there were no deliveries to the door). There is no evidence that Jane ever caught a coach from here - her father did briefly own a coach whilst living at Steventon but had to give it up due to the expense. However, ladies never travelled alone and tended to rely on using the private coaches of their friends and relatives.
