Suirakuen - This is a garden in the Japanese traditional style that reflects Sadanobu Matsudaira's philosophy of gardening. This garden is located in a corner of Nanko Park. Nanko Park is considered to be the oldest Japanese-style Park, started in 1801 by Sadanobu Matsudaira. He won renown as a lord of the Shirakawa domain as well as a tea master and a gardener. Nanko means "southern lake". Sadanobu's design was inspired by the philosophy of "Shimin-Kyoraku" the idea that beauty should be enjoyed by all regardless of rank. He built a teahouse "Kyorakutei" and enjoyed the moment with people from different backgrounds. Even today this philosophy still lives as the main concept of the teachouse. Nihon Teikoku was built as a facility for the tradition of Japanese culture, inheriting the garden philosophy of Sadanobu. At Shorakutei in the garden, you can enjoy matcha green tea in the Shoin-zukuri style room.
