The photo is of the Stortorget or Grand Square in the historic city centre of Stockholm, Sweden. It’s entirely possible that all of these people were disgorged from cruise ships that are in the city port for just a few hours of that day. Mass-tourism was invented by British tour agent Thomas Cook. His first package tour in 1841 was a rail excursion of around 10 miles (15 kilometres) between the English Midlands towns of Leicester and Loughborough - with meals and a brass band included. This was followed by rail trips to Liverpool and around Scotland. In 1851 he arranged for 150, 000 people to travel to the Great Exhibition to London. His first excursion abroad was four years later with two groups doing a ‘grand circular tour’ of Belgium, Germany and France ending in Paris for the Exhibition. Cook also invented travel brochures and vouchers that could be exchanges for hotel accommodation and meals. His company also issued vouchers that could be exchanged for train tickets in Italy. He introduced mass-tourism to Italy and helped boost the economy of that country. Thomas Cook issued it’s own traveller's cheques and had its own fleet of charter planes. Mass tourism exploded during the last couple of decades as a result of a number of factors. These include the recent influx of millions of Chinese citizens with disposable wealth onto the world tourism stage, internet sites that direct people to a restricted number of locations, low-cost airlines, bigger and ever bigger cruise ships ….
