Large cogs on old quarry machinery at the abandoned quarry on the Isle of Iona. The Derelict Marble Quarry on the Isle of Iona. It is said the quarry was worked as early as 1745 by the Earl of Breadalbane when he founded the Marble and Slate Company of Netherlorn. It was officially opened in the late 1700s by the Duke of Argyll but was not operational for long because it was uneconomical due to difficulties extracting it as well as the transportation. It was operational again in the 1800's as the Argyll Quarry Company but didn't last long due to the remote and rocky location proved too hazardous for shipping. One final attempt was made and the quarry reopened again in 1907, closing in 1918 for the last time at the end of World War I. The machinery has been painted by the National Trust for Scotland who are trying to preserve it and this black adds contrast to the other parts which are red and rusty.
