Reigate Windmill Postmill Church on Reigate Heath, Surrey in February. Reigate Heath windmill is believed to be the only consecrated church windmill in the world. It was built around 1765 and is a grade 11 listed building. The postmill roundhouse was converted into a chapel in 1880 and holds regular services during the summer months. The chapel is known as St Cross Chapel. Reigate Heath on which the windmill chapel stands is a site of Special Scientific Interest SSSI. The heath comprises 51ha of extensive sandy heath gorse and heather, and is home to the Spider Hunting Wasp, which burrows in the footpaths. Other local flora and fauna include Alder Buckthorn, Wild Foxglove Digitalis Purpurea, Stonechat, the Small Copper Butterfly, Adder, grass snake, common lizard and slow worm. Reigate Heath is the site of seven Bronze Age burial mounds, called Tumuli or Barrows. These are on the higher ground overlooking the Heath and were excavated in the 19c to discover cremation pots. The Greensand Way - a popular walking path crosses Reigate Heath next to the windmill. In the sky behind in a jet stream of high speed winds shown in cirrus clouds.
