Scene from third voyage. Willem Barentsz (1550-1597) illustration by Henricus Hondius (1573 –1650), originally published in 'Rerum et urbis Amstelodamensium historia' (1611) by Johannes Isacius Pontanus (1571-1639). The book based, on Gerrit de Veer (1570-after 1598) diaries, sets out the details of Barentsz's ill fated voyage to find a Northeast passage through the Arctic Ocean to the East Indies. The ship became trapped and the 16 man crew stranded for the winter. The crew used wood from the ship to construct a lodge called "Het Behouden Huys" (The Saved House). Four crew members including Barentsz died, the other 12 survived by using provisions, cargo and killing polar bears and seals. The hut was discovered again by a seal hunter in 1871 and many items recovered which are now in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Credit: Private Collection/AF Fotografie
