Vintage photo circa 1921 of baseball legend Babe Ruth (George Herman Ruth Jr) in New York Yankees strip. Ruth (1895 - 1948), also dubbed "The Bambino" and "The Sultan of Swat", played American Major League Baseball from 1914 until 1935 and was one of the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He began his top level career as a starting pitcher with the Boston Red Sox, where he played from 1914 to 1919 and won three World Series, but later became one of the League's most prolific hitters after being sold to the New York Yankees in 1919. Ruth's sale by the Red Sox to the Yankees co-incided with a downturn in the fortunes of the Red Sox which has been blamed on the so-called "Curse of the Bambino". The Red Sox had won five World Series titles by 1918 - a record at the time - but 1918 was their last title for 86 years. In contrast the Yankees, with Ruth in the team until 1934, won the World Series four times. Ruth also spent a short time with the Boston Braves in 1935 before retiring. Photo by Bain News Service.
