andlt;strongandgt;Narrowed coronary arteries.andlt;/strongandgt; Coronary angiogram(X-ray) of a 59 year old patient with severestenosis (narrowing) in the left anteriorinterventricular coronary artery (runningdown left) and the left circumflex artery(centre). One of the narrowed areas can be seen inthe interventricular coronary artery at centreleft. The coronary arteries are found on thesurface of the heart, and supply blood to theheart muscle. Narrowing of these arteries isusually caused by fatty deposits called atheroma. This can block the arteries and cause a heartattack (myocardial infarction, MI). Treatment isby coronary angioplasty to widen and strengthenthe arteries, or a coronary artery bypassoperation to graft new arteries on to the heart.
