Sunday 8th October 2017. Donal Walsh, of Knightstown, was the first Captain to pilot the Valentia Island Ferry when it was launched in 1996. 22 Years later, he was the last Captain to pilot the same boat when it retired. The 56 year old ferry has been in use for over 50 years and no longer meets maritime safety regulations. The Irish government has yet to intervene assist with finding an extra 2 million Euro of funding to help purchase a replacement vessel. Photo: Stephen Power
