Over the past 1, 300 years, the Hani people have developed a complex system of channels to bring water from the forested mountaintops to the rice terraces of the Honghe Hani region of Yunnnan Province, Southern China. Several ethnic minorities, each with a distinct traditional way of dressing live in villages above the terraces. The people are extremely hard working and have created an integrated farming system that involves buffalos, cattle, ducks, fish and eel and supports the production of red rice, the area’s primary crop. They gather in different villages on market day to sell their produce and buy necessities. An overview of the village of Yaunyand shows the Ailao mountains in the background and the nearer hilltop houses.
