Arms of the roadway at Tower Bridge fully open showing the ornate victorian iron casting and the steel girders underneath. The traffic across the River Thames is halted by traffic light signals when the bridge is raised. This is a famous victorian three span bridge with a centre bascule bridge design incorporating a cantilevered road crossing between two supporting towers. A suspension bridge links to each river bank. The centre road breaks in the centre as each side is hinged to a raised position allowing tall ships to pass or on occasions as a form of salute or recognition . Much of the architectural work and engineering design was carried out by Sir John Wolfe Barry and when it opened in 1894 the bridge was steam driven .
