Although Margate has become characterised by economic decline in recent years, the old town near the harbour is developing into a flourishing artistic community with galleries, restaurants and coffee shops. This is expected to be boosted by the opening nearby of the Turner Contemporary Gallery in April 2011. With recent cuts in local government spending a lot of Tourist information Centres are closing. They were originally funded by government but there is now no statutory requirement for local authorities to keep them open and they are being seen as a soft option for making savings.
