Weitere Informationen:
The Tian Tan 'Big Buddha', at Po Lin Monastery, Lantau Island, is one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world. The image, 26m (85 feet high), sits on a throne of lotus flowers, symbolising purity. The right hand raised signifies a removal of affliction. The left hand on the lap is a gesture giving dhana. The left-facing swastika on the chest, a seal on the Buddha's heart, is a holy sign of Buddhism, signifying good fortune. The statue, uniquely, faces north. It was built 1990-1993. at a cost of $68 million, from 202 separate bronze pieces assembled on site around a steel framework. Six smaller bronze statues, known as the 'Six Offerings of the Six Devas', offer flowers, incense, lamp, ointment, fruit and music to the Buddha. We see three on the lowest altar platform below the Buddha.
