Cutty Sark, tea clipper, cargo ship, merchant vessel (classed as an extreme clipper) now the only surviving example, moored in specially constructed dry dock in Greenwich undergoing restoration, built Dumbarton and launched 22.11.1869, 963 tons, made first voyage to China 16.02.1870 with wine, beer and spirits returning with cargo of tea, made 8 voyages to China to 1877, worked on wool trade to Australia 1885 for 10 years, left British ownership between 1895 and 1922, brought back and restored by Wilfred Dowman and based at Falmouth, was used as cadet training ship in the 1920s and 1930s, last went to sea in 1938 when sailed to Greenhithe, Kent where she was based until 1954 when (acquired by the Cutty Sark Society) she was towed to Greenwich, a vintage nineteen thirties photograph
