Funnyman Ken Dodd gave his seal of approval to an award-winning design at this year’s Royal Horticulture Society Flower Show. The veteran entertainer signed Preston Council’s Parks and Horticulture service’s gold-standard design at the show which was inspired by his own act. The team, who work on the city’s green spaces and parks, scooped the award for their colourful flowerbed inspired by the legendary comedian and his Diddymen, blooming to the top of the national flowerbed competition at Tatton Park in Knutsford. Spokesman for Ken, Robert Holmes said: “He was absolutely tickled when he saw it, he rang me as soon as he got home and told me what a thing of beauty it is. “As this year is his 60th anniversary of being a professional entertainer, there couldn’t be a nicer tribute to him. He added: “Ken was thrilled to be there and to see the design in person. “He even told me he would like it for his own back garden!” The spectacular floral design titled ‘Lazy Days’ features one of Doddy’s Diddymen snoozing one summer afternoon in his picnic basket unaware of the overflowing trickle of treacle from the Knotty Ash well. Councillor Robert Boswell, cabinet member for community and the environment, said: “It is fantastic news that we have won the gold medal in the RHS National Flower bed competition at the Tatton Flower Show. “The parks team should be very proud of what they have achieved. “They have been dedicated throughout putting in a lot of work even volunteering their weekends. He added: “The parks team is a very talented team, and they have done great things with the parks and green spaces in Preston also.”
