A highlight of the "European Capital of Culture 2010" in the Ruhrgebiet was the closing of the A40 Autobahn for one day on the 18th July 2010. The A40, or "Ruhrschnellweg" is a major route through the industrial Ruhr, carrying in excess of 100, 000 vehicles a day. For the "Still-leben" (still life) event, the 60km stretch of motorway through the Ruhrgebiet from Duisburg to Dortmund was open only to pedestrians in one direction and bicycles and in-line skaters in the other. 20, 000 tables were placed together to make the "world's longest table". Due to the excellent weather an estimated 3 million visitors attended instead of the expected 1m and the event was an astounding success.
