The Monument to the Millennium of Russia was created by sculptor Mikhail Mikeshin in 1864 and erected in Novgorod Kremlin, on the place were according the legend the mythological Varangian prince Rurik (also known as Riurik) took the power over the Russian tribes in 864. Saint Cyril and Methodius, showed on the Monument sitting in front of icon of Virgin, was two Greek (Byzantine) brothers born in Thessaloniki. They created the Glagolitic alphabet, which was used for Slavonic manuscripts before the development of the Cyrillic. St Methodius was the first Moravian archbishop in Great Moravia than until his death. Kievan princess Olga the Saint, who was the first Christian and first female ruler of Russia, is shown in the background in the right side. This relief is the part of huge relief “The Enlighteners of Russia” which is the work of sculptors Mikhail Mikeshin and Matvey Chizhov.
